Gateshead Fell St. John was created in 1825 from Gateshead St. Mary.

Parts of this parish became part of these parishes: Eighton Banks St. Thomas, Gateshead (Low Fell) St. Helen, Gateshead St. Edmund, Gateshead St. George.
