Catalogue Description

Darlington High School for Girls

Founded in 1885 by the council under chairmanship of Sir David Dale as a fee-paying school aiming to provide girls with same type of education as the Grammar School. In 1906 the school was handed over to Durham County Council but came under the control of Darlington in 1915 when the authority became a county borough. In 1911 the school transferred from 'Claremont', Trinity Road, to Cleveland Avenue, now part of the technical college. The school moved to Hummersknott and united with the grammar school to become a comprehensive school.
