Royal Naval ReserveBorn South Shields, 5 November 1914; served in Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 1933 - 1937; commissioned second lieutenant in 2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, January 1938, attached to 2nd Battalion; joined British Expeditionary Force in France, September 1939; awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in command of 16 Platoon at the River Dyle, Belgium, on 15 May 1940; invalided from the Army, 1948; retired 1979. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.
