The firm of Joseph Lingford and Son, manufacturers of baking powder, was established in Bishop Auckland in 1861. In 1888 the 'Model Factory' was opened. In 1908 the company began to sell 'Akala Saline', and in 1912 it introduced 'Lingford's Liver Salts'. Lingford's widened its range of products considerably in 1932 with the addition of custard powder, cornflour, blancmange and ground rice. The factory closed in 1973.
