The Charlaw, Sacriston and Acorn Close Collieries, operated by Edward Richardson and Joseph Hunter [in 1838], obtained from the Bishop of Durham a wayleave over Chester Common and Pelton Fell to the Tyne. In October 1841 the collieries and wayleaves passed into the hands of the North Durham Coal Company which mortgaged them to the Newcastle Joint Stock Banking Company. Following the dissolution of the North Durham Coal Company in 1843 and a second mortgage, the collieries and wayleaves were bought by George Elliott and William Hunter in August 1857.
