Catalogue Description
James Raine: letters (1814-1824) to Edward Blore, deposited 17 February 1993(Acc: 2269)
James Raine was born at Ovington.
From a relatively early age he showed an interest in historical study. He became a close acquaintance of Robert Surtees who was to write The History and Antiquities of the County Palatinate of Durham. He also became friends with Edward Blore an illustrator who was to produce many of the plates for Surtees' History.
Raine was to become author of several historical works including St. Cuthbert, The History and Antiquities of North Durham, and also completed the last volume of Surtees' History following the death of Surtees. Indeed Raine was a founder member of the Surtees society.
During the period covered by the letters (1814-1824), Raine was employed in a variety of capacities. At the age of 21 he became a master at Durham School, he was later to become Dean and Chapter librarian and rector of Meldon in 1822.
For a full transcript of the letters with notes and introduction see Surtees Society vol 200, Raine Miscellany, edited by Angela Marsden. This volume is available in the searchroom. Note that there are slight differences in the order and numbering of the letters in this catalogue and the above volume.
