The records of the Surtees family of Mainsforth, near Ferryhill, include items relating to Robert Surtees (1779 - 1834) the famous antiquarian and author of The History of Durham, 1816 - 1834, and Brigadier - General Sir Herbert Conyers Surtees (1858 - 1933) a distinguished soldier and author of a number of parish histories and Records of the Family of Surtees, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1925. The latter contains complete pedigrees of all the branches of the Surtees Family.
