Catalogue Description
Records given:15 December 2004 Acc: 3093(D)
The Sabulite Factory was situated at the former Tuthill Quarry, near Haswell. The quarry had been worked for limestone by Pease & Partners Ltd. until 1921. It was taken over in 1923 for the establishment of a sabulite factory by The Northern Sabulite Explosives Co., Ltd. The factory was known initially as the Tuthill Works. It made explosives for coal mining. This firm was acquired by Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., which operated the works under the title of I.C.I. (Explosives) Ltd., from at least 1943. During the Second World War, smoke bombs and practice grenades were manufactured. Explosives production ceased in 1961 and the site was re-developed by I.C.I. as a storage and distribution centre. The site was purchased by Sludge Disposals, Ltd., in October 1968.
