Introduction
This collection of records charts the history of the Catcote estate in the parishes of Stranton and Hart (latterly part of West Hartlepool) from 1754 to 1938.
In the early eighteenth century, the Catcote estate belonged to the Rev. Christopher Fulthorpe who, by will dated 1707, devised his property to his three granddaughters, subject to an endowment for a free school in Stranton. One of his co-heirs, Mary Fulthorpe, married Robert Raikes of Northallerton, and her son Robert Raikes Fulthorpe inherited the estate, but sold or mortgaged almost the whole of it in separate portions during the later eighteenth century. In 1799 James Robinson of Castle Eden purchased Catcote from John Wailes of Northallerton, and in 1806 the estate was in turn purchased by Henry Robson of Stranton for £4,000.
All remaining records in the collection relate to the ownership of the eatate by the Robson family. Henry Robson mortgaged the estate almost immediately in 1806 to James Emerson for £3,000 and again in 1832 for £4,300, with a further charge of £700 made by his son William in 1838. Catcote was mortgaged again in 1881 for £10,000.
The piecemeal sale of parts of the estate commenced in 1865. Several parcels of land were sold for building purposes as part of the development of Elwick Road and Park Road in West Hartlepool.
The final transaction in this series is the compulsory purchase by West Hartlepool Borough of a site for a proposed school [Brinkburn] on the Rift House estate in 1938.
The collection includes a small quantity of legal papers, 1831-1841, relating to the charity school at Stranton, which was endowed by the Rev. Christopher Fulthorpe, but not established for many years. In 1831 the Charity Commissioners brought a case against the proprietors of the Catcote estate, and a new schoolroom was eventually built in 1841 in what is now Park Road.
