Catalogue Description
Records of Newby, Robson & Cadle of 10-11 Finkle Street, Stockton on Tees, solicitorsSee also D/NRC
This collection contains records of clients of a number of firms of solicitors, all based in Stockton on Tees, between the1850s and the 1960s. There are no administrative records of the individual firms but it is possible to reconstruct the 'genealogy' of the solicitors whose work is represented in this collection (see 'Genealogy of Newby, Robson & Cadle' D/X 1193/52) from incidental information contained within the records themselves. There are several different firms represented but all are linked through the almost constant merger, fracture and re-combination of the practitioners operating from addresses in Finkle Street and High Street, Stockton on Tees (see Genealogy D/X 1193/52 and business locations listed below).
The earliest practitioners referred to in the collection are W. Dodds and Joseph Dodds (later an MP, who combined his parliamentary duties with running a branch of his practice, Joseph Dodds & Co, from Broad Sanctuary, Westminster) of Finkle Street, Stockton on Tees, who appear acting as land agent for William and Edward D'Oyley Bayley in 1848. One of the solicitors who worked for Joseph Dodds & Co was Charles Ernest Cadle, who appears in trades directories in 1910 as coroner for the Easington Ward of County Durham, and who later worked for the firms of Willan & Cadle; Wilsons, Ornsby & Cadle; and finally, Newby, Robson & Cadle. He is probably the reason for the inclusion in this collection of records relating to clients those first two firms.
Another key character in the genealogy is Frederic Byers Watson, who, between 1880 and 1914, appears to have moved between firms of Stockton solicitors fairly regularly and may even have worked for more than one firm simultaneously. In 1910 he appears in trades directories as Clerk to Stockton Guardians and Assessment Committee and Superintendent Registrar of Stockton District. As a partner in Hunton & Watson of 66/66A High Strret, Stockton on Tees, he is probably responsible for the inclusion of records of clients of predecessor firms, Hunton & Bolsover and Hunton & Hunton amongst those of Newby, Robson & Cadle, as he also worked for two predecessors of that firm: Newby, Richmond & Watson; and Watson, Newby & Robson.
But the bulk of the records relate to clients of direct predecessors of Newby, Robson & Cadle, particularly William Crawford Newby and George Newby; Alfred Robson and Frederick Robson, who, apart from the two years between 1932 - 1934, operated continuously from 10 -11 Finkle Street.
The other key factor in determining what records have survived within this collection is premises. The business locations (below) show that firms of solicitors and individual practitioners favoured the same premises as business locations throughout the period of time this collection covers, so there may be an element of inheriting records and perhaps the clients that went with them, when a new business took over premises from one that was defunct or had moved elsewhere.
Most of the records in this collection are title deeds and other records relating to the disposal of estates of deceased persons and have been arranged by client. The remainder of the records have been arranged by type and date.
