Born Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria; enlisted in King's Own (Lancaster) Regiment c. 1939; transferred to 9th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry before the Battle of El Alamein in 1942, as stretcher bearer; taken prisoner of war at Nijmegen, Holland.
