Catalogue Description

Records given

2 October 1989 (Acc: 1892(D))

Photographs and drawings of Harry Coates (1909 - 1987) of Durham, artist

Harry Coates was brought up at Sherburn Hill, was educated at the Johnston Grammar School, Durham, and became an electrician by trade. His varied career included work in the Sunderland shipyards during the 2nd World War. He was also a cinema manager in Durham, and an electrician for Durham County Water Board. For the latter part of his life Coates resided at 5 Leazes Place, Durham.

Coates was a noted local artist, producing pen and ink drawings of local Durham scenes, particularly the cathedral and castle, and scenes from further afield. He was also an accomplished photographer and produced a series of fine enlarged prints, many of which were used as a basis for his drawings. In addition, Coates produced copper and steel etchings from which he made prints on his etching press.

The records listed below fall into two main groups. First, black and white photographs and enlarged prints taken by Coates in the period c. 1950 - 1970, and, second, a series of pencil drawings, based on the photographs, which were made as a preliminary to the pen and ink drawings. In addition, there are a few examples of the final pen and ink drawings, mostly in the form of photographic copies, and one original copper plate. At the end of the list there is an ink drawing signed Preston Cribb. As it does not follow Coates' style, one assumes that the drawing was given to Coates by an artist of his acquaintance.
