Papers concerning the commemoration of Thomas Wright of Byers Green (1711-1786)
Thomas Wright, the renowned astronomer, mathematician, instrument maker, architect and garden designer was born and died at Byers Green. In 1762 he built a stone villa, known as Byers Green Hall or Byers Green Lodge in his native village. The Hall, in which Wright resided until his death, was demolished in 1962. Plans to erect a Thomas Wright Memorial at Byers Green were initiated in the mid 1980s by local resident, W.L. Colley, with the support of Durham University staff. A commemorative plaque was placed on the site of Byers Green Hall on 27 April 1987. This was followed by a project, as yet uncompleted, to establish a memorial centre and garden in Byers Green. Thomas Wright was further commemorated in an exhibition at Durham University Library, mounted as part of the 'Durham 900' celebrations in 1993. The Durham University Library holds a fine collection of Thomas Wright's published works.
