2nd Durham Rifle Volunteers; 2nd Volunteer Battalion, and 1/6th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry
Born, 1864, of a famous Barnard Castle family; joined 2nd Durham Rifle Volunteers as a lieutenant in 1883; served with this unit and its successor, the 6th Battalion, until 1921; commanded 6th Battalion at the Battle of Ypres, Belgium, before being invalided home; commanded 3/6th Battalion and other units for remainder of First World War; died in 1934, aged 70. Medals in DLI Medal Collection. His son, William Innes Watson, commanded the 6th Battalion during the Second World War.

Born 1878; enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, and served in South Africa in 1902; gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1916; awarded the Military Cross, December 1917; died of wounds, 30 April 1918, aged 40. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.

Born Barnard Castle, 1906; commissioned, 1926, as Second Lieutenant; commanded 6th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, 1942 - 1943 and 1947 - 1950; Honorary Colonel of 6th Battalion, 1959 - 1962; Regimental Secretary; Chairman of the Regimental Fund and Museum Committee; member of the Durham Light Infantry Regimental Committee; member of Durham County Territorial, Auxiliary and Volunteer Reserve Association; his interests included the history of the militia and volunteer forces, the history of the 6th Battalion, and of the regiment, and territorial forces in general; awarded the O.B.E. in 1973; died 25 July 1988. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.
9th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry
Born c. 1919; residence Haydon Bridge, Northumberland; joined 151st Brigade as a fitter in the L.A.D., Royal Army Ordnance Corps; moved to 9th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry c.1940 as sergeant fitter in the Mechanical Transport Section; served with 9th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry until capture near Mersa Matruh, Egypt, in June 1942; prisoner of war at Stalag IV B near Leipzig, Germany, via a camp at Fermo, Italy.
