Durham College of Science was founded in 1871 and taught physical sciences, with a particular focus on engineering, mining, manufacturing and agriculture. In 1904, its name was changed to Armstrong College. Along with the School of Medicine and Surgery, it formed one division of the federal University of Durham.
The two colleges were merged in 1937 to form King's College, which remained part of the University of Durham in the same way and had a continuing focus on applied sciences.
In 1963, the federal university was dissolved and King's College became the University of Newcastle.
