Catalogue Description

This section of the catalogue consists of a number of unrelated deeds deposited in the Museum at various periods during its history. The provenance of many of the items is now lost, but the depositor's name is given where known. Most of the documents relate to places in County Durham and Yorkshire, but there are a few deeds for other counties. Of these the most interesting is the charter of Bishop Flambard granting Ancroft (now in Northumberland, but formerly in the Bishop of Durham's jurisdiction) to Papedy (D/Bo/D 37).

The County Durham deeds include an agreement for the sale of land and the advowson of the church at Seaham (D/Bo/D 22) which is signed by Richard, Duke of Gloucester (the future Richard III), while the section on Yorkshire Deeds contains a marriage settlement of c.1242 (D/Bo/D 55) and a quitclaim of bondmen in Thorp on Tees of c.1295 (D/Bo/D 58).
