Catalogue Description
Charles Knott and SonCharles Knott acted for several years as clerk and traveller for James Wadham Senior and Company, metal and machinery brokers. He seems to have stopped working for them in 1875 and attempted to start his own business in iron goods and colliery supplies. In 1876 he became a partner with Thomas James, engineer's factor, as general merchants in Northgate. The partnership seems to have lasted for only a few months and Charles Knott once again looked for business on his own. He became a representative of a large paint firm and, by 1879, was established in 4 Gladstone Street as an india rubber, paint, oil, varnish, nail, iron, metal, machinery and general merchant. By 1887 the business had been moved to Duke Street, where it continued under his son Charles Herbert Knott, who died in 1968. The shop closed in 1972.
