Shotley Bridge and Consett Gas Company (Ref: D/GSB Section 1)

Shotley Bridge and Consett Gas Company [also known as Shotley Bridge Gas Company] was formed in 1856.
Apart from producing gas for street lamps, houses and small local businesses, the company supplied gas for industrial giants such as Consett Iron Company.
During the process tons of coal tar were produced and sold to Tar Distillers Company of South Shore Gateshead, Redheugh Tar Products Company of Redheugh Chemical Works Gateshead, Wear Fuel Works Company Sunderland and other companies.
Tons of gas coke were delivered by the company to Gateshead Cement Manufacturers.
Coal for gas production was delivered from local collieries such as South Derwent Colliery and Medomsley Colliery.
In 1949 the company was nationalised and incorporated into the Northern Gas Board.
In the 1950s production of natural gas took over the market and proved more profitable causing the plant at Shotley Bridge to be shut in 1954 after almost 100 years of operation.
