Born 21 June 1897, John Robert Cooke was the eldest of twelve children, eight of whom survived to adulthood. His father was a miner and died in 1924. The cause of death was unclear and may have been pneumoconiosis or tuberculosis.
Robert began work at the local [Co-operative?] store in Radcliffe, Northumberland at the age of fourteen. He was appointed general manager of the Togston Terrace and Broomhill [Co-operative] Society aged only 23. He became manager of the Haswell Co-operative Society in 1932.
In 1934, he was appointed secretary and chief executive officer of the West Cornforth Co-operative Society, which he then managed until his retirement.
He died on 4 January 1975 and is buried in the West Cemetery at Amble in Northumberland.
