Catalogue Description

Romaldkirk parish, one of the largest in England, comprised in 1831 over a quarter of the whole wapentake of Gilling West, the area being 53,302 acres of land, 318 acres covered by water. Of this nearly all is open moorland, scattered over which are several small lakes and rocky scars or rugged masses of rock which rise often very steeply from the usually unbroken slopes of grass and heather.

Until 1974 the parish was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is an ancient parish and it is even claimed that the church retains some pre-Conquest features. In 1844 Laithkirk parish was separated from Romaldkirk.
