Catalogue Description
Cockerton, St Mary was established as an ecclesiastical parish in 1925. Previously it had been part of Darlington, Holy Trinity parish which, in turn, had been created out of the ancient parish of Darlington in 1843. As the earliest records show, the church had been conducting services since 1897 (EP/Cok 2/1). St Mary's church is first listed in Ward's Directory for Darlington in 1902. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners subsequently changed the boundaries in 1966 (see EP/Cok 2/10 and 2/11).The parish appears to have erected a church hall in the 1930s and the parish collection includes plans and correspondence relating to its construction. During the Second World War the parish hall seems to have been requisitioned for military purposes and the schedules of damage to be found in the archive suggest that the parish did not necessarily receive the building back in the condition that it had been in previously (See EP/Cok 4/55-64).

The contents of these letters refers to T.E. Pease Charity, making it seem unlikely that it is the Pease Almshouse Charity that was founded in 1820 by Mary Pease (Charity Commissioners' Reports, 1902 and 1904). This correspondence refers to the enlargement of the church and is therefore probably related to EP/Cok 4/77 and EP/Cok 6/16.
