Catalogue Description
The church was built in 1890, on land given by Lord Boyne, as a daughter church of Brandon, St John. In July 1942, the church was destroyed by fire. The only thing salvaged was the church bell which was said to have come from a ship-wreck. The bell was transferred to the Mission Hall which then became St. Catherine's present Church. In 1947 St. Catherine's was transferred into the Parish of Ushaw Moor but after 15 years it was returned to the Parish of Brandon.[from parish profile on Diocese of Durham website http://www.durham.anglican.org/userfiles/file/Durham%20Website/Vacancies/Internal/Brandon%20and%20Ushaw%20Moor/New%20Brancepeth%20PARISH%20PROFILE%202013.pdf]
