Catalogue Description

Durham Johnston Comprehensive School

James Finlay Weir Johnston (1796 - 1855) was reader in Chemistry at Durham University and left money in his will which made possible the founding of the Johnston Technical School. In 1899, the Foundation Stone in South Street was laid by John George, Earl of Durham, the Lord Lieutenant of the County. The school opened in September 1901 as a co-educational day school with the staff also operating evening classes. At first the only members of staff were the first Headmaster, Mr. S. Whalley B.Sc., A.R.C.S., and his assistant, Miss Abraham, B.A. The original thirteen pupils, eight boys and five girls, were divided into two forms. The school numbers increased rapidly, so in 1913, the girls and some of the women staff left to form the Girls' County School sited in the new school building in Freemen's Place (now occupied by Durham Sixth Form Centre). Space continued to be a problem and plans to rehouse the Boys' School at Crossgate Moor were interrupted by the Second World War. As a result of the 1944 Education Act, the school changed its name to the Johnston Grammar Technical School and was able to move into its new building at Crossgate Moor in 1954.

In 1962 the school became part of the Durham Multilateral Unit as 'The Johnston Secondary School'. In 1969 it became co-educational again with the admittance of girls into the first year. In 1974 the plans for the introduction of comprehensive education led to the disbanding of the multilateral unit. In 1979 the Johnston Comprehensive School was formed from Brandon, Johnston and Whinney Hill Secondary Schools. At first all three sites were used, then years 1 and 2 were based at the Whinney Hill site and the rest at Crossgate Moor.
