Catalogue Description
Records of Clara Lucas Bequest and Lady Starmer BequestsThe Clara Lucas Bequest, inaugurated in 1936, provided for classical literature prizes to be awarded to winning essays written by girls of the Darlington Elementary Schools on Domestic subjects. Clara Lucas was prominent in education circles in Darlington from 1894 - 1919, serving on the School Board and later the Education Committee (for further details see E/Da/G155).
The Lady Starmer Bequest comprises two awards. One was to assist the pupils at Darlington High School for Girls, later Hummersknott School. The second provided prizes for the Lady Starmer Speech Competition, also at the High School for Girls.
