[The Durham Coast Circuit amalgamated with the Peterlee Circuit in 1958, the year in which the Peter Lee Memorial Methodist Church was opened in Peterlee]
Ref: M/DCP 110[Middle Street Primitive Methodist Church amalgamated with Hesleden Road (Wesleyan) Methodist Church in 1958 when the Hesleden Road Church closed. In 1962 a new manse was built at Blackhall Rocks on part of the land originally planned for a new Wesleyan Church. This made possible the first resident minister at Blackhall].
Ref: M/DCP 139The Wesleyan Methodist church was opened on 7 November 1917. In 1942 it merged with St. John's (formerly the United Methodist Church) which was opened in 1913 and is now the main Methodist Church.
Primitive Methodists were active in the area as early as 1831 but their main Society was established at the beginning of the twentieth century. They used various temporary buildings: in 1920 they bought two army huts which had been used to house Belgians at Birtley during the First World War. These were used as a chapel. In 1932 they took the name of Bourne Methodist Church and in December 1956 they amalgamated with St. John's].
[The first Methodist meetings took place in Rosemary Lane in 1855. In 1858 there was a Wesleyan Church in Pump Row, later called Chapel Row. The present church opened on 8 April 1885, was closed for approximately a decade, reopening in 1914 as part of Houghton Circuit until the 1930s. Thereafter it formed, in succession, part of East Durham Circuit, 1930s - 1941, Thornley Circuit, 1941 - 1946, Durham Coast Circuit, 1946 - 1958 and from 1958 onwards Durham Coast and Peterlee Circuit]
Ref: M/DCP 202[The first Methodist meetings took place in homes from 1840. In 1876 the Wesleyan Chapel was built (this was closed from 1914 to the early 1920s).
In 1881 the Primitive Methodist Chapel was built (now the Community Centre).
In 1884 the New Connexion Chapel was built and closed in 1893.
In 1932 the Primitives and Wesleyans united and now use the former Wesleyan Chapel]
[The Primitive Methodist Church in Thorpe Street was opened in 1904. The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Blackhills Road opened in 1910. They amalgamated, using the Blackhills Road site and building a hall on adjacent land. This opened in July 1964. The church belonged to the East Durham Circuit from 1914-1940, Thornley Circuit 1941-45, Durham Coast Circuit 1946-1957 and Durham Coast and Peterlee Circuit from 1958 onwards]
Ref: M/DCP 217[The Methodist Society began in Peterlee in December 1952, meeting in members' homes. The church opened on 12 January 1958, a year which also saw the merger of the Durham Coast and Peterlee Circuits]
