Stockton Poor Law Union (Ref: U/St)
From 1834 the Guardians of Sedgefield Poor Law Union were responsible for poor law provision in an area originally comprising the parishes of Stockton on Tees, Stranton, Redmarshall, Greatham, Billingham (including Wolviston chapelry), Norton, Hart (except Nesbitt township), Egglescliffe, Elton, Elwick Hall, Grindon, and Long Newton. [Hartlepool Union was created in 1859, comprising Hart, Stranton, Greatham, and Elwick Hall parishes.]
In 1846, the union also became the rural sanitary authority, lasting until 1875.
In 1862, the Guardians of the union gained responsibility for rating valuation/assessment. This devolved, in 1925, to Stockton Rural District Council, Stockton Municipal Borough Council and Billingham Urban District Council.
In 1930, responsibility for Public Assistance was transferred to Durham County Council.
