Catalogue Contents
Annually, on Whit Monday, the committee organised a parade and competition for various classes, such as horses and carts, tradesmen's turn- out, best pit-pony, etc. In later years, classes were introduced for motor vehicles (1927) and jazz bands (1928). The parade took various routes through the city to a field, such as Gilesgate Barracks field, where the various competitions were judged. The occasion was used to collect funds for the County Hospital. The committee held its meetings in various Durham City hotels. It organised whist drives and dances to raise funds for expenses and prizes.
In 1926, for one year only, it changed the date of the parade from Whit Monday to take part in the County Agricultural Show on 31 July. In 1933 the parade did not take place because of financial problems but it was revived in 1934 and 1935.
