Catalogue Description
Records given10 October 1997 Acc: 2474(D)
The Prudential Assurance Company Ltd, acquired the freehold of 66 & 68 Northgate (occupied by F.W. Woolworth and Company, Ltd.) from Henry James Park in 1936. The Company had intended to purchase the adjoining premises, 70, 72 & 74 Northgate (occupied by Marks and Spencer, Ltd.) at the same time, as a property investment.
However, Marks and Spencer exercised an option contained in their lease from the Darlington Trust to purchase the freehold themselves.
The property at 66 & 68 Northgate was retained by the Prudential Assurance Company until 1983.
Properties in Northgate were renumbered in 1930.
