Records and photographs of the family of John Spence and Martha, née Mullin
According to the 1881 census, John Spence was born in Asher, York, in approximately 1844 and his wife, Martha Mullin, was born in Conisbrough, York, in approximately 1843. In 1881 they are shown living with their seven children, at 34 Sun Street, Darlington. John is described as a labourer at the engine works. In 1881 John and Martha had the following children living at home: Mary Ann, born c.1870; Catherine, born c.1872; Elizabeth, born c.1873; George Gibson Spence, born c.1876; Arthur Spence, born c.1877; James Spence, born c.1879; and Henry Spence, born c.1880
