Houghton Child Welfare Committee was a voluntary organisation founded on 19 January 1920 by a headmistress, Mrs. Fletcher, at the request of Durham County Council. In the first half of the twentieth century, each local authority had a Maternity and Child Welfare Committee to distribute free or discounted milk and food, and provide health advice. The Houghton Child Welfare Committee opened a clinic and raised money for this and other charitable causes. After a decline in use and difficulty in attracting new volunteers the Committee was disbanded on 27 February 2003.
