Catalogue Description
Records of Esme SimpsonEsme Simpson was born on 12 May 1895 into a wealthy family in County Durham. Her father was Colonel Frank Robert Simpson (b.1864), managing director of The Stella Coal Company. Her mother was Alice Matilda Draper. Esme grew up at Hedgefield Hall, Ryton, Blaydon-on-Tyne. She had the following siblings: Claude (1892- 3 December 1917); Basil (b.1898); Cyril (b. c.1899); Stella (b.1890); Vera (b. 9 October 1893); and Iris (b.1897). The family moved to Bradley Hall, Wylam-on-Tyne, Northumberland, in the early 1920s. Esme married Captain W. Rupert King on 27 February 1919 and they lived at Cluny Lodge, Sandown Avenue, Esher, Surrey. They had three children, Denis (b. 26 June 1921); Sheila (b. 23 November 1922); and Thelma (b. January 1926). After Rupert's death in the early 1950s, Esme moved to Yearle, Meadway, Esher, Surrey, where she died in the early 1990s.
