Catalogue Description
The Mullard Valve Company was founded in Hammersmith by Stanley Mullard in the 1920s. Philips Components bought the company in the 1930s, but continued to use the Mullard brand. The company expanded nationally and Mullard was the first business to move onto the Belmont Industrial Estate in Durham City when it opened in 1971. The Durham factory began production in 1972. The principal product manufactured was the colour Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), for use in television displays.
In 1988, the Mullard brand was discarded and the company became known as Philips Components. Locally however, the factory was often still referred to as Mullards.
In 2001, Philips merged with LG Electronics to become LG Philips Displays. The Durham factory was closed in July 2005, with a loss of 761 jobs.
