Alderman Matthew Johnson was first elected to Durham County Council on 21 April 1950. He was an alderman from August 1969 until his death on 29 December 1972. He married Bessie Gawman, who died in 1961. He was one of the delegates of the County Council who visited Russia in 1971. He was also a member of the League of the Lamp of Maintenance, an organisation which supported the Toc H Movement (a club started during the First World War at Poperinge, Belgium, to promote Christian friendship irrespective of rank or class, local branches of which were formed in England after the war).
