The Manor of Bolam in the parish of Gainford was held by the family of De la Pole, Earls of Suffolk, in the 14th and early 15th centuries but the Nevilles, Earls of Westmorland, also had estates there. In 1510 Richard, Lord Lumley, died seised of an estate in Bolam and the manor courts of 1552 - 1560 were held by John, Lord Lumley. It would appear that the Lumleys alienated many parts of the estate. In 1561, Robert Pursglove, the last Prior of Guisborough, Yorkshire, obtained Letters Patent from Elizabeth I for founding the Hospital and Free School of Jesus in Guisborough and he endowed them with his lands in Bolam. The manorial rights passed to the school and hospital and the court rolls and other records are still kept at Guisborough Grammar School.
