Catalogue Description
Records relating to the administration, working and leasing of collieries in North and South Durham by the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne.Catalogue Contents
The colliery names of Gibside, North Banks and Marley Hill appear to have been almost interchangeable in the late 17th/early 18th c. and later distinct, but as the situation is not entirely clear from the records, material has been grouped simply by name of colliery and a separate section maintained for each name. It should be noted, however, that each section may contain references to the other names.
