Catalogue Description

Records relating to the business partnerships of the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, to exploit collieries in the Durham coal field. Partnerships included the Grand Alliance Company, formed in 1726 by the Bowes, Liddell and Wortley Montagu families (the 'Grand Allies') to monopolise the most valuable mineral district in the North of England.
