- Strathmore Estate
Catalogue Description
Records of the agents who managed the Streatlam, Wemmergill and Gibside estates for the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne.Until 1812, Gibside and Streatlam estates were administered by separate agents. For most of the eighteenth century Wemmergill estate was the responsibility of the principal Streatlam agent. From 1812 onwards one agent oversaw all the principal estates (and all other Strathmore estates in England) supported by subordinate agents. Richard Dobson, agent at Gibside 1800-1812, became the first such overall agent.
In some cases it is impossible to establish which of several agents working at a particular estate at the same time was the principal agent. In addition to agents based at particular estates, there are some who seem to have travelled round the various properties with the family.
See appendices 2 and 3 for details of estate agents
