Catalogue Description
Records of the agents in overall charge of the estates of the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, from 1872 onwards.Ralph John Dent (1843-1913) was head agent for all the English estates from 1872 to 1889. He was a mason [Barnard Castle Lodge] and Guardian of the Poor for Teesdale Union.
William Henry Ralston was agent for all the English estates from 1889 to 1928. Also agent for the Durham estates of the Crichton-Stuart family (the Marquises of Bute) and of the Lartington estate of Norman Field. He was a Justice of the Peace; Inspector for the Board of Agriculture; Secretary for the Zetland Hunt; Chairman of the parish council of the township; of Streatlam and Stainton, and of Barnard Castle R.D.C.; Manager of Cockfield, Evenwood and Stainton schools; Chairman of the Barnard Castle District of the Durham War Agricultural Executive Committee; Official for the Primrose League.
Thomas F. McQueen was agent for all the English estates from 1929 to 1937. He was working for the Earl of Strathmore as early as 1889 as clerk at the estate office. Also agent for the Durham estates of the Crichton-Stuart family (the Marquises of Bute) and Norman Field's Lartington estate.
Ernest Hodgson Kirkup (Major) was agent to the Earl of Strathmore for all the English estates from 1937 to c.1966. He worked for Peases West collieries at Crook, 1907; Pelaw Main Colliery Co. Ltd. 1921 - 1923; John Bowes and Partners Ltd. 1923 - 1936 (assistant to Armstrong and Sons). Also agent for the Durham estates of the Crichton-Stuart family. Commanding officer of no. 25 group, Local Defence Volunteers, Gateshead; Arbitrator for the Durham Coal Owners Association. Addresses: Leafield House, Birtley, and after 1938 at Oakfield, Low Fell.
