Deeds relating to the Streatlam estate, near Barnard Castle, acquired by Adam Bowes in the 14th century through his marriage to Alice, heiress of Sir John Trayner. Streatlam was one of the three principal estates of the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne.In the 19th and 20th centuries, separate records series exist for the Cockfield estate, part of the Streatlam estate.
Catalogue Contents
These lands were formerly owned by Andrew Robinson Stoney Bowes and Mary Eleanor, Countess of Strathmore, who mortgaged and later sold them. Acquired by William Davis, they were mortgaged again to various parties. Title was eventually recovered by the 10th Earl of Strathmore.
