- Strathmore Estate
Catalogue Description
Deeds relating to the Wemmergill estate, comprising various manors and lands in the parish of Romaldkirk, Yorkshire (North Riding) acquired during the 16th - 20th centuries. Wemmergill was one of the three principal estates of the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. In the 19th and 20th centuries, a distinction is made between Wemmergill, Holwick and Hunderthwaite estates, identified as either Lord Glamis' or Lord Strathmore's.
As Streatlam and Wemmergill estates were regularly administered jointly as well as separately, the respective Streatlam and Wemmergill sections are supplemented by 'Streatlam and Wemmergill combined' sections in the catalogue: even so, occasional references to Wemmergill affairs may still be found in Streatlam records and vice versa.
