Catalogue Description

Deeds relating to the Hylton estate, one of the smaller estates of the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

Hylton Castle near Sunderland was the principal residence of the Hylton family from the 12th to the 18th centuries. John, the last Baron Hylton, died in 1746 and the estate passed to his nephew Sir Richard Musgrave, who took the name of Hylton. By 1755 the property was up for sale and Mrs Mary Bowes, widow of George Bowes, purchased the castle and grounds.

The estate was administered both separately and with Gibside.

For Mount and Springwell properties see Coal (Grand Allies).
