[The donor of the photograph recalls being taken to this site as a child. He informs that all the navvies were Irish and that they walked from Sunderland through Sunday night to arrive in Durham for a 6 o'cock start on Monday morning, but returned to Sunderland on Saturday afternoon by train.]
