Catalogue Description
On his death in 1598, Henry Smith owned several coal mines, which he left to the City of Durham in his will, to provide trades and employment for the young and unemployed of Durham. The charity later gained further land, including 'New Place' and Heighington's House' in the parish of St. Nicholas, Durham and properties in Witton Gilbert, Evenwood and West Auckland.
Since 1760, the mayor and aldermen of Durham have acted as trustees of the charity, setting rents and allocating the revenue to the poor.
