2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry
Born, 22 May 1907, possibly in Ireland; enlisted at Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, in 2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, 7 July 1925; saw active service and was wounded in the North West Frontier campaign, India, 1930 - 1931; joined 'B' Reserve, 13 February 1933; recalled, 1 September 1939; served with the British Expeditionary Force in northern France and Belgium, and was captured during the retreat of the 2nd Battalion to Dunkirk; spent three years in German Prisoner of War camps, including Stalag XXI A and Oflag 64, before he escaped and returned to England in 1943; returned to active service in France, October 1944 - February 1945; discharged from the Regular Army on 15 May 1950 as Colour-Sergeant; joined 437 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment (T.A.), 16 May 1960; served with Territorial Army until finally discharged on 31 March 1961, aged 54; died 1976. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.
