Catalogue Description
Joseph S. Archbold was born in 1912, only child of Joseph Shaw Archbold (1886-1961) and Ethel Amelia (nee Scrafton, known as Amelia, 1884-1964) who married in 1907. He was scout master at 1st Hesleden Scout Group from 1934 until about 1970. He was also a postman in Blackhall, Hesleden and Castle Eden at this time. During World War Two it is believed that he served in Burma. He died in April 2005.The collection includes photographs and negatives of scouts, cubs and girl guides. It also includes personal family photographs and negatives, including family holidays to Blackpool and London.
Most of the photographs were taken using a pair of roll-film cameras, one giving square images and the other oblong; these were in use at the same time from the earliest mid-1930s photographs. The photographs of scouts and cubs are impossible to date due to the wide variety of uniform worn.
