Catalogue Description
David Lewis Ayre was born in 1931. He joined the Durham Light Infantry (DLI), serving with the 2nd Battalion in Wuppertal, Germany, 1952-1955. He married Doris Winifred Berry in 1956, at which time he was living in Wooley Terrace, near Crook. They lived in Peases West before moving to Alma Terrace, Stanley [near Crook], c. 1958. They had three children: David Norman, born 1957; Paul Lewis, born 1958; and Andrew John, born 1963.David was a keen cross country runner, both during his time with the DLI and afterwards. He was also interested in cycling, particularly road races.
The photographs are a mixture of those taken during his time in the DLI, showing the 2nd battalion and locations he visited while they were posted in Germany, and family photographs showing his wedding and early family life.
