Catalogue Description
These postcards were found in an album labelled 'Embroidered cards bought in France by my father Mr Alfred Benjamin Jones while service in Army during First World War'.Some are addressed to named correspondents and these correspondents appear to belong to two families: the Hunter/Jones family and the Ferriday family. They range in date from 1906-1966.
There are three photographs of unidentified individuals, who may be members of the above families.
There are also a large number of postcards without addresses or endorsements. The largest group of these are postcards dating from the 1910s, many of which form series. Though some relate to themes such as separation, which would have been relevant to the First World War period, very few contain any direct links to the war.
There are also a smaller number of embroidered postcards and these relate much more closely to the war, incorporating flags and even photographs of high ranking officers.
Another group of postcards is those bearing seasonal greetings and though some contain images of France or Germany, there is again no direct link to the war.
The final group is of postcards, photographs and official guides of places in County Durham
