Note accompanying picture states: 'We believe this soldier, whose picture was found in the loft of a house in The Grove, is one of the Ross brothers, Joseph [1897] or Sam [1899], who used to live at Coxhoe Square and also Kelloe, sons of John Arthur Ross and Sarah Ann Bowes.'
In the 1911 census for Coxhoe Square there are a Joseph and Samuel Ross with parents John and Sarah Jane (who would appear to be John Atkinson Ross and Sarah Smith who married in 1895). There was a Joseph Ross in the 20th DLI 1915-1918 who was awarded the Silver War Badge. The only Samuel Ross found in the DLI medal rolls won the 1915 Star so must have been older than Samuel Ross of Coxhoe. This photo could therefore be Joseph Ross.
