Catalogue Description
IntroductionThe collection has been arranged under five principal headings: the records of the former St. Hild's College; those of the former College of the Venerable Bede; those of various joint committees of the two colleges; the minutes of the joint governing body and papers relating to the merger of the two colleges 1972-75; the records of the merged college from 1975.
The material in section four has been kept to a minimum. Technically the two college committees in existence from 1972 to 1975 were committees of the joint governing body but it has been found simpler to treat these, and other committees, under the two respective colleges and to apportion their minutes and papers to sections one and two. The governing body of the combined college continued to exist after the merger with the University: it took on its present identity as the St. Hild and St. Bede Trust, an educational charity, in 1983. All material from the trust has been taken into section five.
The separate accounts and accounting practices of the two colleges were maintained after 1975 and these financial records have been left under the two respective colleges. Various files of the post-1975 period continued to be added to the filing system of the former Chief Administrative Officer of Bede and will be found in section two. A fully archival arrangement of the records would be grossly confusing even if it were possible. The various constitutional mutations of the colleges are but incompletely reflected in the creation of new record classes and in the demise of old ones. The Bede College committee structure of the late 1960s (see subjoined diagram) defies an orderly arrangement of its records. The existence of both a Chief Administrative Officer and a Bursar at Bede with an unclear relationship between the two posts clouds matters further.
Those interested in the histories of the colleges should consult:
St. Hild's College, 1858-1958, by Angel Lawrence, 1958
Bede College, a commentary, by Donald E. Webster, 1973
The College of St. Hild and St. Bede, by I.G. Booth, 1979
Copies of these works are available in the Record Office library.
A Contribution to Teacher Education, Neville's Cross 1921-1986, by Desmond Dalton provides background information on colleges of education in general and the position in Durham in the 1970s in particular.
Kenneth Wilkinson's 1968 MEd thesis, 'The Durham Diocesan Training School for Masters, 1839-1886' is available on-line at etheses.dur.ac.uk/9611
The collection is commended to those with interest in the development of teacher training in general and of the role of the Anglican colleges in the north of England in particular. Many former students and their descendants may find much to interest them.
