The Darlington charity known as Blue Coat School was established by the endowment of Dame Mary Calverley on 19 April 1715. The charity did not have access to a classroom until a parochial school was established (when the first free education system was introduced) and the first 20 "Blue Coat Boys" named by the trustees began their tuition. Ten of these children were given new clothing every two years until 1895. Through a bequest by Robert Noble in 1719, further funds were to be allocated to the school under condition that the school master should be licensed by the Bishop of Durham. It is assumed that the charity never benefited from that bequest, as none of the school masters was licensed by the bishop.
